IMDb rating: 8.1/10 (as of October 17, 2026) IMDb

Richard Roeper sees Judd Apatow’s documentary as a surprisingly fresh take on a comedian whose life has already been picked over plenty. Instead of leaning on a parade of talking heads, Apatow mixes archival TV appearances with family photos and home video gathered from friends and fans, an approach Roeper thinks captures the full range of Macdonald’s gift, from his endless shaggy-dog jokes to his Weekend Update years.

He also appreciates that the film doesn’t dodge the messier chapters, including the gambling, the private cancer fight, the fibs about his age and schooling, and the O.J. jokes that cost him his SNL job. By the end, he says, a reflective and deeply kind man emerges from behind the deadpan.
Liam Gaughan is even more enthusiastic, describing a consistently entertaining investigation that treats Macdonald less as a biography subject than as a riddle. Since the comic never got the chance to tell his own story, Gaughan argues, the mystery framing fits, and some of the biggest laughs come from clips of Norm contradicting himself with a perfectly straight face.

He singles out the Carrot Top feud, David Spade’s loyalty after the SNL firing and the Bob Saget roast footage as highlights. His only reservations are that a film built from archive material can never be definitive, and that Norm’s late-life sincerity about faith and mortality can’t always be taken at face value.
Roger Moore is cooler on the film. He enjoys spending two hours with a performer who played dumb, lied for sport and stretched bits until they died and came back to life, and he thinks the clips show Macdonald at his sharpest in short, punchy bursts.

Still, Moore feels Apatow mostly lines up admiring friends and peers rather than digging in himself, so the result plays like a clip reel with tributes attached. The real Norm stays out of reach, and viewers come away with more affection than understanding.
Rendy Jones is the toughest voice here, giving it two out of five. He credits the archival team with unearthing rare material, including home videos from Norm’s farm upbringing and footage that punctures some of his tall tales, and he enjoys the warm recollections from Adam Sandler, David Spade and other old friends.

His problem is the presentation. The film imitates scrolling through search results and clicking web links, a gimmick he finds dated and out of step with Macdonald’s sensibility. With little fresh insight on offer, Jones says it adds up to a long best-of reel that fans could assemble online themselves.
The consensus: Critics agree the archive is a treasure trove and that Macdonald’s one-of-a-kind deadpan lights up nearly every clip, but they split on whether Apatow’s internet-rabbit-hole format reveals the man or simply replays him. The verdict: a warm, often hilarious tribute that fans shouldn’t miss, even if the real Norm stays just out of frame.
